Shedding Skin

I have some marks I didn't have before
that I only just noticed
as I shed my skin
as I stripped away my masks.
Some
made of papier-mâché,
as easy to remove as face cream.
Others of clay;
and still others, of porcelain,
so fragile and easy to crack!
Just when I thought I had removed them all;
I found the fiber ones
those carved in stone
the pure metal ones!
So many textures for disguise!
As for these,
I bend my knees and ask for God's intervention.
May their removal not be so painful,
but may He remove them
with His scalpel.
Now
I have some marks I didn't have before
but that no longer matters. . .
from the fount of the Water of Life
I draw what is essential to wash my face
every day . . .
and that is essential!
