“Since December 25th is observed in commemoration of the birth of Christ, and since children have been taught by precept and example that this was undoubtedly a day of joy and rejoicing, it will be difficult for you to overlook this period without giving it some attention. It can be used for a good purpose.” Adventist Home, p. 478.

At Christmas, there are many traditions people follow that often involve excess and intemperance in various ways. So here at home, we decided to create our own “good traditions” with the children to make this season special and centered on Jesus. One of them is that a few weeks before Christmas, we dress dolls and teddy bears in biblical clothes and encourage the children to set up the nativity scene and retell the story of Jesus' birth to help them grasp the true meaning of Christmas.

During this time, also, anticipating the many gifts they usually receive, we encourage them to share their toys with other children. They choose toys in good condition, put them in a box, wrap them as gifts, and we take them to an organization or directly to a child in need. It's incredible to see their selflessness as they part with toys that were once so precious. And even more incredible is to see their joy when delivering the gifts and knowing they are making someone happy.

Another tradition is to light a candle and sing 'Happy Birthday' to Jesus during the main Christmas meal. The girls get very excited, and once the youngest even asked if Jesus wouldn't be coming for His birthday. Before or after the meal, we also have a special service. We sing Christmas carols and retell the story of Jesus' birth, which the children enjoy acting out with their figures.

Another idea we adopted from some friends is that when opening presents, we first give a small box with a heart inside, explaining that this is a gift Jesus wants to give to every child. If they first accept that gift, which is a new heart, then they can receive the other presents. Through this activity, we have the opportunity to reflect on the profound meaning of giving our hearts to Jesus and accepting the new heart He offers us each day.
