“In the study of science, too, we should gain knowledge of the Creator. All true science is but an interpretation of God's writing in the material world. Science brings from its investigations only new proofs of God's wisdom and power. Rightly understood, both the book of nature and the written Word familiarize us with God, teaching us something of the wise and benevolent laws by which He operates.” Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 441.

Here is a suggested study using the Bible, science, and character together. For this example, we will use the study of grass.

In God's wonderful world of nature, some miracles go unnoticed because they are so common. A blade of grass is one of these wonders. Here are some ways grass works and what it reveals about the Creator: Psalm 65:9-13 tells us: “You visit the earth and water it; you greatly enrich it with the river of God, which is full of water; you provide the grain when you have prepared it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with abundant showers and bless its growth. You crown the year with your bounty, and your paths drip with abundance. They drip on the pastures of the wilderness, and the hills are clothed with joy. The fields are clothed with flocks, and the valleys are covered with grain; they shout for joy and sing.” Psalm 65:9-13

According to the scriptures, grass was one of the first things God created on our planet. It seemed to be the foundation for all life. This living green machine feeds and ministers to all. From the ruminating cow to the wealthiest city magnate, all depend on humble grass.

I encourage you to study these lessons in the Creator's classroom, adapting them to your own age. Learn together about character, science, and the Bible. May we have ears to “hear the grass sing” and hear its message, “God is love.”

1. God's EngineeringOur original home was a garden, but even if we live in a city, we can still benefit from seeing a small grassy yard or even an empty lot that grass has taken over. A tiny blade of grass is an example of an architectural marvel. Its height is 500 times its diameter, yet it uses nothing for support. It is trampled, the wind pushes it, and yet it points back to the sky. This is something created by God!

2. How Grass OriginatedWhen our world was only three days old, God made the grass. “Then God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants...’ And the land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed... And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.” Genesis 1:11-13Jesus called grass into existence, for by Him all things were created. Colossians 1:16Jesus designed and created grass along with trees and other vegetation.The scientific name for the grass family is Gramineae, changed to Poaceae, which consists of approximately 7500 species. It is one of the largest plant families in the world.What was the purpose for which God created grass? It was to be food for man and animal. God's plan is that all food for humans and animals would come from the plant kingdom. Genesis 1:29, 30Character Lesson: Jesus is the CreatorProject: Go outside and pick a blade of grass to study. It was created by Jesus. What is its shape? What is its color? Note its texture. How does it bend? What would the world be like without grass?

3. The Purpose of GrassLife on Earth depends on green things. Grass grows without human help, but humans cannot live without grass. Plants get their food from the soil, sun, and themselves. Grasses and other plants absorb approximately 10% of solar energy. When animals, insects, rodents, or humans eat the plant, they receive only a fraction of the solar energy stored there.Some creatures, like cows, sheep, and some people, get their food directly from plants. Other creatures get their food by eating animals that have fed on plants. Cats and owls that eat mice are included in this group. Humans who eat meat would also be in this second group.A third group consists of predators like cats, wolves, and eagles. They eat the animals from the second group. God made them natural scavengers to take care of what is dead. Hyenas, vultures, and pigs are examples of these animals.Grass is the original food source. The rabbit eats grass, the weasel eats the rabbit, the wildcat eats the weasel. This process is called the food chain.Around 12 different types of grasses stock our supermarkets with cereal products; they are made from the seeds of grasses: rice, corn, oats, rye, wheat, and barley. Sugar and molasses come from sugarcane, which is also a type of grass. The grasses that feed the world are wheat, rice, and corn.If we didn't have grass for a year, famine would eliminate people from the world. We must have farmers who cultivate plants. Being a farmer is a very important profession.The Bible asks the following question, “Why spend money on what is not bread?” Isaiah 55:2. Farmers work with the original source of all food. Psalm 104:14 says that God “makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—that they may bring forth food from the earth.”Character Lesson: Gratitude for Food.Project: Make a report of what your family eats in a day. How many different types of grass (herb) did you eat? The food we eat doesn't grow in the supermarket. How much does your family spend per week to buy grass (herb) products that someone else planted?
